Overview of the FBM242 Discrete Output Interface Module

The Compact FBM242 Discrete Output Interface Module contains 16 discrete output channels that are externally powered and rated up to 2 A at 60 VDC.

It is part of the Compact 200 Series I/O subsystem described in the Compact 200 Series I/O Subsystem Overview (Ref. 1).

The associated termination assembly (TA) provides discrete outputs for 2 A 60 VDC voltage loads, relay outputs (120 V AC/125 VDC or 240 V AC), or relay outputs with power distribution and fuses. Each output is completely isolated from other channels and ground.

The module connects the electrical output signals from the control processor to field devices. It performs digital I/O applications, supports ladder logic, and provides fail-safe configuration options for the outputs.

Compact Design

The compact FBM242 module is designed to be narrower than the standard 200 series FBM. It has a rugged acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) enclosure that provides physical protection for the circuitry.

The enclosure, designed for mounting the FBM, provides various levels of environmental protection up to harsh environments (Class G3) according to ISA Standard S71.04.

Visual indicators

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the front of the module provide a visual indication of the module’s operating status and the discrete status of each output point.

Easy removal/replacement

The modules are mounted on DIN rail-mounted or rack-mounted Compact 200 series base plates.

Signal connectors for redundant fieldbus, redundant independent DC power supply and termination cables are included.

Two screws on the FBM secure the module to the Compact 200 series base plate.

When removing/replacing the module, there is no need to remove the field device termination cables, power supply or communication cables.

Fieldbus Communication

The fieldbus communication module or control processor is connected to the redundant 2 Mbps modular fieldbus used by the FBM.

The Compact FBM242 accepts communications from either path (A or B) of the redundant 2 Mbps fieldbus – if one of the paths fails or is not in operation, the FBM will not accept communications from the other path.

If one of the paths fails or is shut down at the system level, the module will continue to communicate over the active path.

Current Limit

Field power supplies used for contacts or solid state switches are current limited.

Terminal Assembly (TA)

Field I/O signals are connected to the FBM subsystem via DIN rail mounted TAs.
