The MVME172P4 allows users of VME embedded controllers to realize the price/performance ratio of the RISC architecture while maintaining the MC68000 target code.
while maintaining MC68000 target code compatibility.
By combining the superscalar performance of the MC68060 with a wide range of optional features and the IndustryPack interface, OEMs can customize the MC68060 for their applications.
OEMs can choose the right product for their application without having to pay for features they don’t need.
The new “Petra” application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) replace features previously implemented in the IP2 chip, MC2 chip, and MCECC chip, improving the performance of the memory subsystem.
Memory configuration switches enable customers to customize memory sizes for applications requiring smaller memory configurations.
Microprocessor Options
The MVME172P4 utilizes the superscalar MC68060 microprocessor, whose RISC hybrid architecture enables superb integer and floating point performance.
The MC68060’s object code is compatible with previous generations, allowing significant performance improvements while preserving software investment.
For cost-sensitive applications that do not require floating-point performance, the optional MC68LC060 can be ordered.
VME Bus Interface
VMEbus interface functionality is provided by the Motorola-designed VMEchip2 ASIC.
In addition to the control system’s VMEbus functionality, the VMEchip2 includes a local bus to/from VMEbus DMA controller,
VME board support functions, and Global Control and Status Registers (GCSRs) for inter-processor communication.
The MVME172P4 also supports the VME D64 specification within the VMEbus interface, further improving system performance.
Transition modules
The optional MVME712M transition module supports the MVME172P4 series using standard I/O connections.
The module will connect from P2 of the module to a transition module with industry standard connections.
Industrial Package Interface
A key feature of the MVME172P4 is the IndustryPack logic interface.
This interface provides a 32-bit data channel between the www.abb-drive.com IndustryPack module and the native MC68040 bus.
The IndustryPack module provides a variety of connections to “real world” applications such as I/O, control, interface, analog and digital functions.
Up to four single-width or two double-width IndustryPack modules can be installed on the MVME172P4 and still occupy only one VME slot.
When I/O requirements change, new IndustryPack modules can be installed, protecting the customer’s overall investment.
Memory Expansion
The MVME172P4 offers configurable SDRAM, with memory sizes determined by switch settings and memory devices.
Flexible design
Because of the MVME172P4’s flexible design, certain features on the board can be removed without affecting hardware or software compatibility.
Configurations without SCSI or Ethernet are available. The IndustryPack and VME interfaces can also be removed.
